Sanctions won’t solve situation in Ukraine, Chinese Defense Minister says
Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe said that China is not interested in the conflict in Ukraine, but believes that sanctions pressure will not help resolve the situation, but will only aggravate it.
«Conflict or war is the last thing China would like to see, at the same time, we do not believe that maximum pressure or sanctions can solve the problem. They may even increase tensions and further complicate the situation,» the minister said at the ongoing Shangri-la Dialogue security conference in Singapore.
Wei Fenghe drew attention to the fact that in the current situation in Ukraine, China «never provided Russia with any material assistance» for its armed forces. He also stressed that the Sino-Russian relationship «is a partnership, not an alliance,» adding that it «is not directed against any third party.»
«There are more crises and chaos in the world, and our world cannot be called peaceful and calm,» he said.
The Minister of Defense noted that China supports the negotiations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, and looks forward to negotiations between the United States and NATO with Russia to create «conditions for an early ceasefire.»
