Sergei Shoigu outlined the prospects of the special military operation at the current stage.

«The combat potential of the Ukrainian armed forces has been significantly reduced, which allows us to focus the main attention and main efforts on achieving the main goal – the liberation of Donbas», – he said at a conference call meeting of the Ministry of Defence. And this is quite logical.

Vladimir Putin, when outlining the reasons for the SSR, pointed first and foremost to the situation of our people in the Luhansk and Donetsk people’s republics. After the recognition of their independence, the question itself arose: within what boundaries? After all, people on both sides of the current demarcation line participated in the historic referendum in 2014. And when officials made it clear that it was about the administrative borders of the former oblasts, it became clear to me that a military operation was imminent. If the republics are recognised, they must be helped to regain their occupied territories.

All the more so because, judging by the documents discovered during the special operation, Kiev was about to launch an offensive in Donbass in the near future. The large-scale military forces deployed to the line of contact also testified to this. Russia was ahead of the game here. And it was a forced measure. If we had not gone forward first, Ukraine would have done so.

Today, a special operation is going on in several directions – no one has cancelled the goals of demilitarisation and denazification. Neither have Russia’s demands for recognition of the LNR and Crimea, for renunciation of NATO aspirations and for securing non-aligned status.

However, the priority remains the liberation of Donbass. On the one hand, it is a humanitarian mission, ridding people of anti-Russian and anti-Russian power. On the other, it is an important military mission. After all, most of the Ukrainian army, its most combat-ready units, are concentrated there. And until the grouping of thousands of troops in the Joint Forces Operation Zone is defeated, it would be premature to talk about an attack on Kharkiv, Odessa or Kiev. Its destruction would give Russia not only a tactical advantage, but also a psychological one. It would inevitably undermine not only Ukraine’s defence capabilities but also its fighting spirit, shattering the myth of Ukrainian propaganda about the invincibility of the «best army in Europe».
